Is self-publishing going from cool to mainstream? Self-publishing Times 1 3

Self-Publishing Times 1 3
28 June 2013

Dear Readers and Writers

Here are some interesting notes from news and information sources. Is self-publishing coming of age? Maybe it is a bit like rock ‘n roll, or other non-approved activities in their time – cool one day, mainstream the next. Some news briefs illustrate the point: the UK newspaper The Guardian starts a new series on self-publishing; a couple save their home through going the self-publishing route; and a writer regains control through self-publishing. Detractors still exist in large numbers, however, as seen by the assertion that ‘Self-published authors are destroying literature’.  The debate continues.

As many of you will remember, we've had a couple of false starts, but now we think we've come up with a way of finding the best self-published works without getting overwhelmed by emails and manuscripts.

Self-Published Authors are Destroying Literature
Self-published authors with their insistent need to spam social media and pump out a copious amount of horrible ebooks are ruining the modern online bookstore. You can’t browse Kobo, Barnes and Noble, or Amazon without running into a maelstrom of poorly written and poorly edited books.

The term "self-publishing" is a misnomer; it doesn't mean that the author takes on all the parts of the publishing process as well as the writing. The author orchestrates the editing, cover design, production, distribution and promotion, but...

Self-Publishing Times 1 2

Self-Publishing Times 1 2
3 June 2013

Dear Readers and Writers

Here are some interesting notes from news and information sources. Many of the articles focus on the ease of self-publishing as well as the inherent dangers. One of the key points I noted in one article was how self-publishing companies let down their clients (writers). In some cases, clients have paid thousands of dollars or pounds only to have books presented in a less than quality fashion. They let down writers and readers, but happily bank the upfront money people fork out for their services. Nevertheless, self-publishing is here to stay and is only growing, so I hope the articles below help writers and encourage publishers.
